Devin Mickens: I'm always thinking about how can I make this moment an epic image.

To begin, where are you based? How long has photography been a hobby and career of yours? .What motivated you to get started?

Based in the Washington D.C. Area. Photography has been a hobby since 2009 and a career since 2016. Just loved creating works of art that last forever.

Devin, tell us a secret, what is the key to getting the best out of someone for portrait and beauty shots?

For me, it's creating the emotion inside of the subject's mind before picking up the camera hopefully that emotion and expression will carry over to the photograph.

What does it take to achieve a unity of the artistic and the commercial aspect of fashion photography?

I try to think about the story I want to tell, then I make sure all the pieces align as best as possible to convey that story.

How do you feel about digital manipulation in present-day photography? What do you think it delivers in the final image?

I think that the digital manipulation portion of photography is a great tool to elevate your work. It also can be a crutch if you don’t understand the craft.

What services do you provide and what does your "team" consist of?

I provide a host of photography services primarily fashion, commercial, and wedding photography. My team offers every aspect of making great images from hair, makeup, creative direction, videography, logistics and etc.

Do you prefer working on location or in the studio? What's your favorite light source, and why do you choose it?

I love both equally. I love the control of light that you get in the studio. I also love the dynamic backgrounds and atmosphere you receive on location. My favorite light sources a parabolic softboxes and beauty dishes.

In your opinion, what makes the good picture stand out from the average?

Storytelling.

What inspires you and what gives you ideas to create your beautiful images? Can your ideas change depending on the model you are working with?

I want to create stories that we don't usually see in my community. I think the model can affect and should affect the images/story you are trying to capture.

How has photography influenced or changed you as a person?

I think photography has allowed me to see the world differently, I'm always thinking about how can I make this moment an epic image.

What are your future plans/goals for the next couple of years?

Photographer and creative director two major commercial campaigns in 2022. I also have this epic high fashion creative brief that I want to see come to fruition in 2022.
