Plastic has transitioned from representing the wonders of modernity to representing human and environmental decline.
When plastic first appeared on the scene in the early twentieth century, it was thought to be fluid, graceful, and beautiful. It quickly became an iconic symbol of modernity. It exuded the excitement of a burgeoning techno-industrial future. The Possibilities of plastic gave some observers an almost utopian vision of the future.
However, the image of plastic has shifted to that of a sinister, toxic substance that leaches unknown and invisible hazards into our bodies and the environment.
Based on this, I devised two characters based on how plastic would have appeared as a character in 1907 as someone graceful, beautiful, and elegant. The second is based on the combination of Techno and utopic.
