Above and Below the Surface
Above and Below the Surface is an AI-generated menswear editorial created by graphic designer and AI artist Pegekama, published in the printed edition MALVIE Fashion Across Cultures 135. In the artist's words: "Two worlds, one exploration of contemporary masculinity. From the storm-swept decks of a weathered vessel to the confined machinery of a submarine, the series explores the tension between freedom and confinement, strength and vulnerability, elegance and industrial decay. Sculptural sailor couture, exposed skin and fluid tailoring give way to understated menswear, dramatic shadows and quiet intensity. Rusted steel, heavy chains and intricate machinery become the backdrop for an unconventional vision of masculine beauty."
From the printed edition: MALVIE Fashion Across Cultures 135
Above and Below the Surface is one of the editorials in MALVIE Fashion Across Cultures 135, the new printed edition of MALVIE Magazine, alongside Form & Presence, URBAN BOTANICA, Elizaveta Ruzmaykina and The Space between Shadows.
The printed edition will be available to order from our print partners MagCloud, Peecho and DPBee.
About Above and Below the Surface
Above the surface, Above and Below the Surface plays out on the rusted deck of an old ship under a heavy grey sky. Navy and white sailor codes are taken apart and rebuilt: wide sailor collars worn over bare chests, a cropped navy jacket with high-waisted wide trousers, a striped deep-V top under a white cropped jacket, sailor caps and loose black neckerchiefs. The men lean on anchor winches, sit on piles of chain and climb rusted stairways, with the open sea behind them.
Below the surface, Pegekama moves into the riveted steel of a submarine. The palette turns to grey, cream and black: a ribbed turtleneck, cream shirts with braces and grey trousers, waistcoats and a long grey overcoat, framed by gauges, valves, pipes and round hatches. A shaft of light through a porthole and a man reading a letter in his bunk give the second half its quiet, cinematic tension.
