"The bob haircut is an old friend of ours, even if you’ve never tried it yourself, you probably thought about it at least once, so it needs little to no introduction."

One could never say that the bob haircuts are - or have ever been - out of style as it is a timeless look like not many others, but one thing is right: it’s been a while since it was the go-to look. For a few years now, the beauty standard for women has been focused on long hair, and I mean really long hair. If you’ve been online for the past year, you’ll know how the whole Internet was dominated by 90s hairstyle looks such as the iconic 90s blowout, and there are now a million ways to curl your long hair without using heat - as haircare is also a major trend. And those things are still trending, don’t get me wrong, it’s just that we’ve been seeing a lot of girlies ready for some change and willing to chop their hair off, opening the door for the latest short haircut trend: the comeback of the Bob Haircut.

The ongoing success of the style has a lot to do with the season - winter is a great time to experiment and change - but it seems like it will be staying for a lot longer, as in the whole year. We’ve seen some of our favourite celebrities and trendsetter it-girls hop on it, such as Zendaya, Hailey Bieber, Selena Gomez and JLo leaving their long locks behind and giving room for bobbed cuts. So it’s no surprise we all got a little itchy feeling to maybe try it too. Also, it’s so popular because it looks good on various hair textures, skin tones and can go for women of different ages - actually, it can make you look a lot younger if that’s what you’re looking for.

The bob haircut is an old friend of ours, even if you’ve never tried it yourself, you probably thought about it at least once, so it needs little to no introduction. Actually, it is so popular that even the microtrends that came of it are also very well known - the blunt bob, long bob, and even asymmetrical bob - and now it’s time to welcome its newest, edgier take: the choppy bob. As the name says, it is all about the choppiness, but it also has a lot to do with adding dimension to your hair even in a shorter length and, by consequence, to your face as it is a textured hairstyle. And now it’s not the first time all celebrities are trying on the short locks - it’s been going on for decades now.

A great thing about the bob haircut and maybe the reason why it always comes back to the spotlight is the length. It just has the perfect length not to bring your face features down - something that can easily happen with long hair. It gives you the possibility to reshape your face with its curtains or fringe layers, and it creates the illusion that your features are tighter, more lifted than they actually are - that’s why it’s a good option for women over 40. Also, the length of this style creates space for a lot of movement and balance, softening your whole appearance - let’s not forget to avoid making it too blunty around the face.

As we’re talking about an even shorter version of the classic bob hairstyle, the choppy bob comes with layers perfect to frame the face, something that could never be unflattering - so it’s really a win. It will take off years of your face while adding volume to the hair - another thing that we can never get enough of. So just imagine the wonders it can make for people with thin hair with all the new volume and texture - it makes me want to get up and chop my hair right now. Also, as it softens the face it works magical things in making broader facial features a lot more slim and delicate, accentuating the cheekbones and creating a naturally polished and put together look that’s elegant and fashionable for this year.

And I know we’re living in a ‘embrace your natural color’ and ‘going more and more brunette’ and ‘brown is the way to go’ era, and I personally love it, but hear me out now. Adding some highlights - or lowlights, or babylights - to your new choppy bob will add even more depth and dimension to the look, serving an even more polished look that I know you want to try. You don’t have to make it blonde, just one or two tones lighter than the rest of your hair, just to really get the most of the look. And there you go! The perfect, timeless, versatile hairstyle to hop on the trend - I promise you’ll be seeing it everywhere all year along.

Now that I’m pretty sure you’re at least a little curious and maybe a little tempted to try it on, it’s time to get deeper into it. To maintain and style your bob to keep it always perfect and pretty, keep in mind that texture and volume are key to the style - so go hard on those. The best way to style it and make it look perfectly done would be with waves - but not babyliss ones, I mean beach waves or something like that. If you have naturally wavy or curly hair, your normal routine should work fine for the new haircut, but if you have straight hair, work on creating some more volume - a little scrunch with leave-in should get it done.

If you are team heat and find it easier to just get it done quickly with it, there are some alternatives for you too. The goal is to make it wavy, so find the best way to create some waves and work with it: it looks so pretty with loose waves or simply bend towards the ends. The final look is what matters, and to get to it you can use a babyliss - if you know how to use it to create some natural waves, something I can not do - or a simple flat iron, which I find way easier. The point is to have a soft bend, achieving a more natural look. You can even do the waves in different directions to make it really look like you’re just God’s favourite and you were born with perfect styled hair - or use a Dyson hairdryer because I guess it does everything at this point.
