Off the Grid
Off the Grid is a fashion editorial photographed by Gokee Thao with model Abby Welch, published in the printed edition MALVIE Effortless Chic 161. In the photographer's words: "An urban fashion editorial — San Francisco, California. Unavailable, unbothered, somewhere between the shadows and the spotlight. A little city chaos, a little main-character energy. Against the imposing geometry of San Francisco's glass towers, a study in contrast unfolds. Oversized leather, unfiltered light, deep shadows, and unconventional perspectives capture the spontaneity of youth against the permanence of the city. Blurring the boundaries between street style and high fashion, the series explores individuality within an environment defined by scale and structure. The subject becomes both a part of the landscape and a disruption of it — effortlessly present, yet entirely her own."
From the printed edition: MALVIE Effortless Chic 161
Off the Grid is one of the editorials in MALVIE Effortless Chic 161, the new printed edition of MALVIE Magazine, alongside The Melancholy of Time, Baroque Dreams, 1920s vs 2020s: Fashion in the Surreal Loop and Epoch of Aura.
The printed edition will be available to order from our print partners MagCloud, Peecho and DPBee.
About Off the Grid
Off the Grid is shot in the shadow of San Francisco's glass towers, among dark hedges, flowering shrubs and a tall exit sign. Abby Welch wears an oversized, slouchy black leather jacket over a white cropped tank top and light-wash ripped jeans, with white trainers and a black shoulder bag hung with teal headphones and a pink tassel.
Gokee Thao lights her with a hard flash against a deep blue sky, shooting from low angles so the skyscrapers tower behind her. She strides along the pavement, crouches on her heels, leans back over a railing, raises an arm to the sky and glances back over her shoulder, casual, cool and entirely at home in the city.
