A Mirror to Culture: Taylor Nevin on Styling the Morning Dreams Come True

A spread shot in Copenhagen showcasing a walk home the morning after a luxurious night out. Inspired by the warm, raw, authentic, tired feeling you get the night after you realize your dreams are coming true. We wanted to highlight independent designers during Copenhagen Fashion Week. We hope to bring the fresh energy of the emerging spotlight of the new fashion capitol to young designers.

Dreaming With Your Eyes Wide Open is one of the twenty editorials in MALVIE MAIN ISSUE 72, the 190-page, perfect-bound November 2026 main issue of MALVIE Magazine.

Taylor Nevin: the interview

You find inspiration in the tension between culture and fashion. Where do you feel that tension most strongly today, and how does it show up in the way you style a story?

I feel that tension most intensely in the reputation that the fashion industry carries. Most people see our art from a surface level, materialistic perspective. I see that as a beautiful challenge to style very specifically and thoughtfully around a story in hopes to provoke any kind of feeling out of a viewer. I just want the world to see fashion for what it is, a mirror to culture.

This editorial was built to spotlight small international designers. What drew you to these designers, and what did you want readers to discover about them through your styling?

Our editorial spotlights amazing pieces from Jacob Heath located in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, Anges Saaby Thomsen in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Francesca Golles based out of the UK, Dubai, and Italy. These designers all share a unique wearability in haute couture pieces. I wanted to showcase their craftsmanship and perspective. The editorial tells the story of the walk home after a late night at a fashion week party.

Each designer we collaborated with brings forward that desire to feel that feeling of, “Did my dreams just come true?”. Photographer Lisa Ströhm Winberg, Makeup and Hair Artist Hedi Nyvang, and models Siff Schuldt Hein and Hedda Færøy were also carefully selected to contribute to that desirable feeling.

Your studies in material culture and textiles give you a deep understanding of what clothes carry beyond their look. How does that knowledge guide the pieces you choose and the way you put them together?

I see clothing and fashion as two separate entities. One is physical and one is figurative. The magic is made where the two overlap. I like to find the overlap and create in there, tapping into the perception of shape, color, silhouette, and aesthetic to create a guided story to follow for the viewer.

You have worked with storytelling brands such as The Walt Disney Company, Rent the Runway and Aritzia. What did those experiences teach you about telling a story through clothing that you now bring to your own editorial work?

Working with a story that has been assigned to me taught me how to dissect and translate the story through material pieces with no personal attachment, just high-standard execution. Now that I get to create and tell my story, the additional emotional layer creates a depth to my attention-to-detail, quality process that makes me so proud and dedicated to my work.

You love working with creatives who have a worldly point of view. How did your team shape this editorial, and what happens when different personal perspectives meet on set?

My amazing team coming together from all around the world only amplified that question of, “Is this what it feels like for my dreams to be coming true?”. Since I was young, traveling and experiencing other cultures has always been a great source of inspiration for me. Seeing these perspectives grow together into a new perspective, offers a depth to the final images that I don’t think would be possible to capture without the subconscious differences.

As a stylist, writer and creative director, you move between several roles. What are your dreams for the years ahead, and which stories do you most want to tell next?

I dream of sitting in a position of authority in the industry, known for and credible because how much I care for and deeply believe that fashion is integrally important to our being and survival on both physical and mental levels. My many roles all work together to refine my voice and perspective, ensuring that wide audiences can hear me and feel my passion. I hope to continue to share the stories that are found in the deepest parts of my soul for others to connect and feel seen in.
