About The Space between Shadows
The Space between Shadows is shot in black and white, in a studio where light is shaped into forms. A band of hard light cuts across a grey wall, the bars of a window blind fall over Natsuko Yoshihara's face, and a round pool of light carries the shadow of bare branches behind her. Her own shadow joins in, repeating every movement on the wall.
Andrew Grauman builds the series on a few strong pieces: an oversized white shirt with a dark skirt, a cropped leather jacket with black shorts and ankle boots, and a long-sleeved black bodysuit with sheer tights and a long chain. She stretches her arms overhead, sits sideways on a simple office chair, rests a hand at her face, a quiet, graphic study in light and shade.
