About Ink & Identity: The Art of Being Sam
The whole series is shot against a deep black backdrop, with a single soft light carving Sam out of the dark. His dark curls are loose, a long pendant hangs on a cord around his neck, and his tattoos are the real wardrobe: a vase of roses across his torso, flowers and lettering along his arms, a large piece spread over his upper back. A black jacket, dark trousers and a brown shirt slipping off the shoulders are the only clothes.
Ann Forde keeps the poses sculptural and close. Sam reclines on one elbow with his jacket open, folds his arms, looks back over his shoulder, hides half his face behind his forearm and finally turns away to show his back. The warm skin tones against the black make each frame feel like a painted portrait, quiet, direct and personal.
