What inspired you to pursue a career in fashion photography, and how did you get started?
I have always been fascinated by art and started drawing at an early age - I began using the medium of photography in high school. As a hair industry educator and runway hairstylist, photography has remained a constant way to express creativity throughout my career. Now that I am stepping away from hair clients after almost 40 years - photography and creativity are more central than ever.
Can you share your creative process when conceptualizing a fashion shoot? How do you approach themes, colors, and styles?
I think of each shoot as a tiny movie - all elements play their role and each model is an actor portraying a role in my production. All elements are vital considerations - fashion, art direction, hair, makeup, nails and environment are each carefully chosen.
Which photographers or artists have influenced your work the most, and why?
Steven Miesel, Steven Klein, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Sheila Metzner, Nick Knight, Tom Ford, Rei Kawakubo, Vivienne Westwood, Guido and Pat McGrath I study the masters of photography, fashion design and beauty I pore over their work with pleasure . My work is informed by them all but I never dare to copy them. I endeavor to make every photo shoot special in some way since we are bombarded with imagery every day on social media.
What has been your most memorable fashion shoot to date, and what made it special?
I could never pick one favorite. That would be like choosing a favorite child. I love them all.
How do you collaborate with designers, stylists, and models to bring a vision to life?
I have a carefully curated group of people I collaborate with over and over. They are all talented and focused. We understand each other, share the same taste, are interested in the same things and most importantly enjoy spending time together.

What role does location play in your photography, and how do you choose the perfect setting for a shoot?
I usually am in studio because one can control the environment but on location shoots are exciting occasionally because each one brings its own set of challenges and rewards.
How do you stay updated with the latest trends in fashion and photography to keep your work fresh and relevant?
I follow fashion magazines and feast on the underground fashion, art and beauty on social media. I’m also always preoccupied with pop culture and cool, chic, young people in big cities.
What challenges have you faced in your career as a fashion photographer, and how did you overcome them?
The challenges are legion and never ending- but the intoxicating gratification of creativity is the antidote.
What is your favorite type of lighting or technique to use when shooting fashion? Do you prefer studio setups or natural light?
I love dramatic shadows and I adore stark bright light - but if I were forced to pick one fork of light it would be the human form bathed in sunlight through a window.
How do you balance showcasing the clothing or accessories with telling a story through your images?
It’s always a glorious, seductive dance - each shoot is a puzzle the narrative dictates - sometimes more and more and sometimes less is less. Calibrating how these things sing in harmony to evoke a certain aesthetic is one of the most sublime joys of a fashion shoot.
What advice would you give to aspiring fashion photographers trying to break into the industry?
See the world, pay attention to everything- have your antennae up at all times. Inspiration and information abounds wherever one looks.
What are your future goals as a fashion photographer? Are there any brands, models, or designers you dream of working with?
I have far too many dreams and ambitions to mention.
