Theatre of Desire is a fashion editorial photographed by Alan Byland with model Joël Zupan, creative direction and styling by Bíró Barbara and makeup and hair by Emese Torma, shot at Theaterhotel and Suites Wien and published in the printed edition MALVIE MEN Edition 69. In the creative director's words: "I wanted to create a world where elegance meets eccentricity, where beauty can be exaggerated, unconventional and unapologetically dramatic."

About Theatre of Desire

Theatre of Desire moves through the rooms of a hotel like scenes of a play: grey panelled walls and doors, red damask wallpaper hung with oval portraits and glass sconces, a library of bookshelves and patterned wallpaper. Joël Zupan wears a crown of dried flowers in his dark curls throughout. He begins in a ruffled white lace top and a full sheer tulle skirt, perched on a round red velvet ottoman, then appears in a pale champagne ruffled blouse layered with long strands of pearls over a white corset.

Alan Byland lights each set warmly and lets the poses grow more theatrical: the model rests his chin on his hand, holds a billiard cue to his lips, and lies back across a billiard table in lace and ruffles. In the library he wears a black corset, a black and olive brocade cardigan with fur trim, lace trousers and a sheer black overskirt, with smoky eyes and a coral lip. The result mixes Rococo extravagance with a contemporary, playful idea of menswear.
