About Closer to Essence

Closer to Essence pares the wardrobe down to a white satin shirt with an open collar, black trousers, worn boots and, in one frame, a black blazer with gold buttons. Emanuela Contino's long dark curls and small gold earrings are the only other ornament. The settings are just as plain: carved wooden doors, a deep doorway, a grey stone wall and a pale panelled wall.

Arianna Driganti switches between black and white and soft natural colour, and keeps most frames close. Hands rest under the chin, push through the curls or tuck behind the head, and the satin catches the light at each fold. In the wider shots the model sits on the step of the doorway, knees drawn up, small against the dark wood.
