Lose Yourself
Lose Yourself is a fine art editorial photographed by Marina with Zarina Tanova as model and retoucher, published in the printed edition MALVIE Body Positivity 140. In the photographer's words: "We explored the aesthetic of psychological transformation: how a pristine, delicate white tulle skirt can slowly morph into a suffocating cage of black feathers, and how a ballerina's ultimate dedication to her art becomes a dangerous, beautiful obsession."
From the printed edition: MALVIE Body Positivity 140
Lose Yourself is one of the editorials in MALVIE Body Positivity 140, the new printed edition of MALVIE Magazine, alongside Porcelain Doll, No Strings, The Strings That Bind, Focus on Lucrezia and Midnight Couture.
The printed edition will be available to order from our print partners MagCloud, Peecho and DPBee.
About Lose Yourself
Lose Yourself draws on the film Black Swan and on Swan Lake, and it is told entirely in black and white. Zarina Tanova wears a black feathered bodice and a stiff black tutu, satin pointe shoes and a small feathered headpiece, with dramatic smoky eyes and dark lips; in one frame a pair of great black wings opens behind her.
Marina alternates full ballet lines with close, tense portraits. A deep bow with arms trailing, a raised arabesque arm, an arched step under a single beam of light sit beside crossed arms, a hand at the throat and a face half hidden in a dark velvet curtain. Hard light on a dark ground turns every gesture into a graphic shape, and the mood stays dark, intense and theatrical.
