About Renaissance

Renaissance is set against heavy dark-blue drapes, lit softly from one side like an old portrait studio. Ali Ismail opens the series alone in a grey textured jacket and trousers, then sits back in a tan leather chair in an olive brocade waistcoat, white shirt and green trousers. Ndeye Khady Badiane answers in a painted floral bustier with a sky-blue tiered tulle skirt and heavy gold chains, and later in a long black-and-white lace dress with sculptural gold earrings.

The couple frames carry the story. A burgundy overcoat with a dark fur collar stands beside a cream fur jacket and a pale tulle skirt she sweeps out to the side, and in a later frame she rests a foot on a stool in a printed rose-and-rust robe while he sits beside her bare-chested in brown trousers. Pauline St Denis closes with two black-and-white versions of the lace portraits, letting the texture of the lace and the poise of the pose speak.
